About Edward Marcus

Edward Neil Marcus recently moved to St. Paul, Minnesota from the Boston area. While in Massachusetts, Mr. Marcus was the founder and music director of the Concord Ensemble, rehearsal assistant for Symphony Pro Musica, and music director for the Weston Drama Workshop at Regis College.

Mr. Marcus's original works and transcriptions have been performed at conservatories, high schools, and music camps, and by independent professional and amateur organizations.

Mr. Marcus has a Master of Music degree in Conducting, and a Bachelor of Music degree in Clarinet Performance, both from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.

Original Works

The premiere of Mr. Marcus's Concertpiece for Bassoon and Wind Ensemble resulted in a commission for another work from the Hudson (Massachusetts) Arts Alliance, and launched his career as a composer. Since then, Mr. Marcus has written a number of works for small and large ensembles, and a full-length musical.

Here is a complete, live recording of Mr. Marcus's Moods of Lavender, played by the New York based Lavender Trio (Beth Evans, flute; Heather Johnsen, Clarinet; Judy Marchione, Bassoon):

Transcriptions

In years past, many composers learned their craft by transcribing works of earlier composers for different groups of instruments. Following this path, Mr. Marcus has created transcriptions of music of varying degrees of difficulty for both small and large ensembles.

Listen to these sample clips of the New England Conservatory Wind Ensemble's performance of Mr. Marcus's transcription of The Noon Witch by Antonin Dvorak for a sample of his ability at orchestration.
